Every autumn the Santa Ana winds pour through the canyon that gave them their name, the narrow pass where the Santa Ana River and the 91 Freeway enter Orange County at the edge of Anaheim Hills. They arrive hot and bone dry, and they carry embers far ahead of any flame.
That is why Zone 0 Anaheim Hills planning begins with the first five feet around your house. We have supplied natural stone to architects, contractors and homeowners since 1982, and at our Anaheim showroom it has become the outdoor question we hear most this season.
Why Santa Ana Winds Make Zone 0 Urgent in Anaheim Hills
In October 2017, Canyon Fire 2 crossed these hills on gusts near 45 mph, and roughly 5,000 homes in Anaheim Hills, Orange and Tustin were ordered to evacuate.
Fire officials said many houses were lost to embers that landed well ahead of the fire line, and some of the first homes to catch were on Canyon Heights Drive. An ember needs no wall of flame. It needs bark mulch, a dry shrub or a wooden gate resting against stucco.
Is Zone 0 Law in California Yet?
Not yet, and the difference matters. The State Board of Forestry adopted emergency Zone 0 rules on August 19, 2026, then withdrew the package from legal review on September 8 to make technical edits.
As of mid October 2026 no statewide rule is in force. Treat the five foot ember resistant zone as sound preparation, and check the Board’s page before you finalize a design.
Step 1: Check Your Fire Hazard Severity Zone in Anaheim
The City of Anaheim says wildfire risk is greatest in east Anaheim, and the state’s 2025 recommended map placed about 5,904 acres of the city in the Very High category. Look up your address on the state’s Fire Hazard Severity Zone viewer.
If your street backs onto open space such as Deer Canyon Park Preserve or runs toward the 241, call Anaheim Fire & Rescue’s wildfire mitigation team before you plan anything else.
Step 2: What to Put in Zone 0 Instead of Mulch
Start by clearing the strip down to soil: bark, wood chips, dead leaves, firewood and plastic bins all go. The mistake we see most often is a handsome new patio that stops eighteen inches short of the wall, leaving a mulch bed exactly where embers settle.
Clients usually assume the patio is the protection. In reality, the inside corner where the house meets the ground is the part that matters most.
Step 3: Choose Zone 0 Stone Pavers for Anaheim Hills
Natural stone does not burn, which is why fire safety guidance lists stone and pavers alongside gravel and concrete for this zone. Our textured marble pavers come 1¼ inches thick in Versailles and ashlar patterns, and their worn, tactile surface gives bare feet real grip. Each piece carries the mineral record of its quarry, so no two layouts ever read quite the same.
Marble Pavers vs Porcelain Pavers
If you want less upkeep, our R11 textured porcelain pavers in a 24 by 24 inch format need no routine sealing and hold a consistent tone. Marble asks for more care but ages into a soft, lived in patina.
On September afternoons that can top 100°F, lighter beige tones usually feel kinder underfoot than dark stone, though finish and shade matter as much as color.
Gravel vs Pavers Next to the House
Gravel is affordable and works well around planters, but it scatters onto walkways and traps leaves. Many tile stores in Anaheim sell pavers by the square foot and leave the edges to the installer.
In our design consultations we start with the wall line, the doors and the downspouts, because a clean edge against the house is what keeps debris from collecting.
Step 4: Detail Your Noncombustible Hardscape at Doors, Fences and Pools
Transitions decide whether a Zone 0 truly works. Stone thresholds at patio doors close the gap where leaves pile up, and the adopted draft called for no new combustible fences or gates within five feet of the house.
If your pool sits close to the wall, tumbled marble or travertine pool copings finish the edge in the same noncombustible language as the deck.
Step 5: How Often to Seal Marble Pavers Outdoors
Seal once before grouting and again after the grout cures. Our product guidance suggests resealing textured marble roughly every six to twelve months outdoors, while brushed limestone usually holds three to five years.
Clean with a pH neutral stone cleaner, since acids etch calcite stones, and follow our stone care guidelines. Before each Santa Ana forecast, sweep the joints, because dry leaves are what embers find first.

Stone for this strip should be chosen in daylight, in your hand, next to a photo of your own wall. Browse our outdoor and pool & spa collections, then bring your perimeter photos and measurements to our Anaheim tile showroom on E Howell Ave.
If you plan to carry the same stone indoors, our guide to limestone slabs in Anaheim shows how one palette can run from kitchen to patio, and our sister brand Country Floors offers marble flooring options for the rooms that open onto it.
