Confirm Where This Tile Can Go

Check the Usage section of your product page for wall, floor, and exterior suitability, and confirm with your installer, particularly if you're considering this tile for a floor or wet area. Many tumbled marble products in this scale are designed with walls and backsplashes as the primary application, though some formats are floor-rated. Where it is used on floors, tumbled marble's textured surface generally offers very good slip resistance thanks to its worn, uneven face. Confirm the specific product's rating rather than assuming based on the finish alone, and for exterior use, ask about this stone's freeze-thaw performance for your climate.

Prepare a Flat, Sound Substrate

Tile can be installed over most structurally sound substrates that are clean, flat, dry, and free of wax, dust, grease, and other debris. Repair, patch, and level any damaged or uneven areas. For walls, use cement backer board or a similarly rated substrate in any area exposed to moisture, such as a shower or a backsplash near a sink. Waterproofing beneath the tile is recommended for most floor installations, and is essential in showers and other wet areas. Remove moldings, trim, and appliances that would interfere with installation.

Plan the Layout, Including Pattern Sequencing if Applicable

Mark the center point of opposing walls and snap chalk lines that intersect at the center of the room or wall field, checking that they're perfectly square. Dry-lay a section of tile with spacers along both lines to see how the cuts fall at the edges, blending pieces from multiple boxes as you go, since color, pitting, and edge character all vary piece to piece.

If you're working with a repeating pattern like Versailles, dry-lay the complete pattern sequence over a large enough area to see it repeat at least once before any adhesive goes down. These patterns combine a few different module sizes in a specific, non-repeating-looking sequence, and laying pieces out of order will throw off the pattern for the rest of the installation. It's much easier to catch and fix a sequencing mistake during a dry layout than after tiles are set in mortar.

Choose the Right Mortar

A premium white thin-set meeting ANSI A118.4 or A118.15 is a good baseline for tumbled marble in this scale, since these formats are generally lighter than large-format textured or leathered stone. Back-butter each tile, adding mortar to the tile back as well as the substrate, to fill voids from an uneven back surface, which is common with tumbled tile. If you're working with a marble type known to be moisture-sensitive, confirm the right mortar with your supplier before you start.

Seal Before Grouting

Apply a thin, even coat of penetrating sealer to the tile face before grouting. This acts as a grout release, keeping grout pigment and moisture from soaking into the stone's naturally open, pitted surface. Take care not to let the sealer pool inside surface pits, and keep it away from joint edges so it doesn't interfere with grout adhesion later. Let it cure fully before you move on to grouting, and keep the tile protected from dust and spills in the meantime.

Cut the Tile

Mark cuts with a pencil or grease pencil. A wet saw with a stone-rated blade gives the cleanest, most controlled cut. Keep in mind that a cut edge will be straight and smooth, not rounded like the tile's natural edge, so plan cuts to land at walls, corners, or other spots where the edge profile is less noticeable, rather than in a prominent, visible location.

Set the Tile, Working with Rounded Edges and Wider Joints

Spread mortar with the flat side of the trowel, then comb it into ridges with the notched side held at roughly a 45-degree angle. Don't cover your layout lines, and don't spread more mortar than you can tile within about 15 minutes. Set each tile with a slight push or gentle twist, not a slide, and use spacers sized for the wider joint this finish calls for; because the edges are naturally rounded and a little irregular, a generous, consistent joint does more visual work here than it would with a straight-edged tile. Leave a perimeter gap of about 1/4" between the tile field and adjoining walls or fixed surfaces. Wipe excess mortar from the tile face as you go. Avoid walking on floor installations for at least 24 hours, or as long as your specific mortar recommends.

Decide How to Handle the Surface Pits, Then Grout

Before you grout, settle on how you want to handle the tile's natural surface pits. Filling them with grout along with the joints gives a smoother, easier-to-clean surface, and is generally the better choice for floors and wet areas, since open pits can collect dirt, moisture, and grime over time. Leaving them open keeps more of the tile's raw, tumbled texture, which is a common choice on backsplashes and accent walls; if you go this route, plan on cleaning excess grout out of the pits with a small brush or tool before it fully cures.

Once that's decided, wait at least 24 hours, or per your mortar's instructions, before grouting. Spread grout diagonally across the joints with a rubber float held at a 45-degree angle to pack it fully, working it into the pits at the same time if you're filling them, then hold the float closer to 90 degrees to scrape excess from the tile face. Let the grout firm up for 15 to 20 minutes, then wipe the surface with a clean, damp sponge, rinsing frequently, until the joints and any filled pits are smooth and even. Never use vinegar or any other acidic cleaner on marble; it will etch the stone. Use a pH-neutral, stone-safe haze remover instead, and test it in an inconspicuous spot first.

Seal Again, Then Care for the Finish Over Time

Once the grout has cured, apply the sealer's final coat or coats across the whole surface, following the manufacturer's instructions; a heavily pitted surface sometimes needs a second coat to fully protect. Plan to reseal roughly every six to twelve months, checking more often in high-traffic or wet areas.

Sealing protects against staining, but not etching, the dull mark left behind when an acid touches marble on contact. Tumbled marble's already-worn, matte character means etching and light scratches are very hard to notice here, which is part of why it's such a forgiving, low-worry finish for everyday use. Wipe up spills like wine, coffee, citrus juice, and tomato-based food promptly, and clean with a cleaner made specifically for natural stone. Skip vinegar, bleach, ammonia, and most general-purpose household cleaners, since many are acidic. If you left the surface pits open rather than filling them, check them periodically for trapped dirt or debris and clean them out as needed.
